Take a Break When You Need to, Before You Burn Out
Follow along with a GCC student working at their desktop through a regular assignment due later the same day. The student starts early enough and with sufficient pre-existing material to work at a slower pace without much of an issue. Three hours later, the student has completed half of the assignment and grows tired of the relentless typing. However, after briefly considering a quick break, the student instead continues to work on the assignment to get it done as soon as possible, despite having under four hours left to submit it. Less than two more hours afterward, the student finally completes the assignment but not without several grammatical and formatting errors left unnoticed. The student proceeds to submit the assignment and afterward takes a moment to decompress. Suddenly the lights flicker throughout the room, and the student lays their head down on the keyboard, by the blinding light of the submitted screen.
Scene Breakdown:
The PSA starts its story at the desktop of a GCC student as they sit down and put their hand on the mouse, beginning to start an assignment. The clock is also displayed prominently as it is a reoccurring detail used to easily show the time.
On the monitor, the writing the student is working on can be seen in a word document, with canvas open in another tab to an assignment. Directly showing the viewer what the student will be doing throughout the PSA.
The student is shown to have continued typing until 8:00 P.M. with some of the progress visibly made on the document. The student continues to type, which sets up the next scene.
The student slowly stops typing as they pause and raise their hands, this pause indicates the student briefly considering taking a break but decides to continue with the assignment to get it over with as soon as possible. Thus, they sigh and reluctantly place their hands back on the keyboard and begin to type more aggressively. This scene also shows that three hours in, the student has yet to take or even consider a break at all.
This scene shows time passing from 8:01 P.M. to 10:29 P.M. up close on the clock.
The students frantic typing comes to a stop as they have finally completed the assignment. They then reach for the mouse to go to canvas and submit it. This is to exemplify that without a break you can become much more eager to complete something without noticing or caring about any mistakes.
As the student is about to submit the assignment, what can be seen is multiple examples of grammatical and formatting errors that were caused due to a lack of focus, as the student continues to submit the assignment.
Dramatically, the student presses the mouse button and the assignment is submitted. This scene is meant to help express the weight of this action.
Afterward the student steps back a bit as the lights flicker behind them, representing burnout with the lights around them actually burning out. The student then proceeds to lays their head on the keyboard, as they have been working non-stop on the same assignment for over five hours.
The video then pushes out a bit as we see the student laying their head on the desk in the dark, with only the blinding white light of the canvas screen illuminating the student’s body. This scene represents how burnout can dim or remove the motivational or creative light in a person.
