Every Friday night, you will find me at one place: my church. I’m a leader for a college ministry, and that ministry has a weekly event called Collective. It’s where a bunch of college students come together to socialize, play games, and learn about God. I’ll be walking through what a normal night at Collective looks like.
Collective starts off simply, at 6:30 PM with games and a coffee bar. The coffee bar is the main attraction since most of us are caffeine addicts. Ellie runs the coffee bar with other volunteers to serve coffees, matchas, lemonades, sodas, and energy drinks. The coffee bar remains open until about 9 PM for those people who couldn’t quite make it on time before Collective started.

From the coffee bar, we go into a time of worship and prayer. People take their seats at a table, and we get to sing songs that praise God. After about three songs, we pray over any situations that might be pressing or stressful for those at our table, as well as praying over people around the world. We also have the chance to praise for any answered prayers or good times.

Following our time of prayer, one of the teachers will take us through a message in the Bible. It’s broken up between reading the passage, talking with others at our table about deep discussion questions, and, of course, a healthy helping of jokes and banter.
After we finish up at about 8:30 PM, we’re free to hang out or do whatever we want. This is when you can find people having serious conversations, catching up with each other, cleaning up, or doing some of the most random things (as pictured by the male dogpile; I still don’t know why this happened).

Our last event of the night is usually dinner. People start asking around about where we go to eat, and we have a few frequent favorites. Ihop, In-N-Out, Chipotle, and Tacos Calafia are all in our rotation for Friday night dinners. Some people go home early, some get dinner elsewhere, but we all get to look forward to the same event the next Friday.
