Glendale Community College swept South Mountain Community College Sept. 9 in a 3-0 volleyball match, led by Mikayla Shepston’s 13.5 points. The game was hosted at South Mountain Community College.

After this match, Glendale Community College’s volleyball season record came to 5-2 and South Mountain Community College’s record to 1-6.

When interviewed about the outcome of the event, GCC head coach Lisa Stuck said “Volleyball has had a lot of success” this season. She added that “pride and camaraderie” gained from previous games created an atmosphere where the “environment is exciting and is a positive experience” for players in attendance. Trust and familiarity amongst teammates acted as a major factor towards the player’s rhythm between sets.

Mikayla Shepston, Kensie Neville, Tehya Yazzie, Elizabeth Trachte, Tatum Peterson and Libby Monson were on GCC’s starting lineup. Mikayla Shepston led the team with 13.5 total points. Kensie Neville and Tehya Yazzie followed close behind, Neville scoring 13 points and Yazzie scoring 12 points.

Set one consisted of 14 total kills, 7 attack errors and 47 total attempts for the GCC team. With 7 errors, only 7 of the 47 attempts were successful kills. After warming up in set one, the team began to slip into a more effective rhythm as they entered into the next set. With 11 total kills, 4 attack errors and 37 total attempts, set two saw a higher success rate with overall attacks. Despite a decreased number of attempts, kills were being completed at a higher efficiency with less errors to note. Hitting attempts amongst the GCC players continued to be honed as the match approached its end. Set three finalized the game with 14 total kills, 3 attack errors and 28 total attempts from the team. With nearly half of the total attempts ending in a successful kill, the team concluded the match with its highest success rate of the night.

  1. Hello Mykenzie, your news story is great, with a ton of information about the game scores! When I first read the total score, I immediately kept reading because I wanted to know how the game unfolded and what moments led to the final result. Your story does an excellent job building suspense and guiding the reader through the progression of the match.

I like how you describe the person you interviewed as “strong and committed”; this gave me a clear perspective on the coach’s passion for the GCC volleyball team. The coach seemed very excited and was filled with dedication when she expressed, “volleyball has a lot of success.” Her leadership appears to be a driving force behind the team’s achievements.

Besides knowing the core of each set, I did enjoy the detailed information about the total blocks and kills. This type of information also gave me an idea of how the team and the fans felt after the game, which can impact the vibes.

Overall, you did an excellent job on your story. I like how you guided your story based on the team scores and service. I think you did a very great job keeping track and providing additional details about more upcoming volleyball games and coach contact information.

  2. Hi Mykenzie, great job on this story. I like how you included the stats on the player in everything she did. Also great job including the 5Ws and the how, that is very important on when writing a sports story. Also, really great job on givng the emotions of the game, especially the coach. The emotions always seem to give away the vibes of how the game is going and especially if they win or lose and how they prep for the next game. So yes, great job on this story, great job identifying the 5Ws and the how, and great job on the additional details. You look on your way to being a good journalist.

  3. Hello Mykenize,
I thought this was a wonderful and informative recap of GCC’s volleyball match against SMC. One of the most interesting parts of the article was seeing how the team’s performance improved throughout each set. The hitting percentage increased from .149 in the first set to .189 in the second and then to an impressive .393 in the third. That suggests the team became more effective as the match continued. I also found the individual statistics interesting, especially that Mikayla Shepton led the team with 13.5 total points while Kensie Neville followed with 13 points. It would be interesting to know how their performances contributed to the team’s success beyond the point totals. One question I had while reading the article is about the score of 53.5 to 0.0 compared with the reported 3 – 0 set victory. Was the 53.5 to 0.0 score based on a different scoring system or a statistical calculation? Maybe clarifying this could help readers better understand the result. Overall, the article does a good job highlighting GCC’s strong performance and providing statistics that show how the team earned its victory.

  4. Hello Mykenzie, this is a great article, I think your lede is quite strong and the inclusion of GCC’s overwhelming victory quickly got me interested to read more. I especially liked how thorough the information is for this game. Rather than leaving out specific details, you list numerous statistics for things like, “kills,” “errors,” and “attacks,” made throughout the match as well as the total outcome. The quote you give from head coach Lisa Strong, “Volleyball has had a lot of success” feels further supported by these statistics, not only from this game but also GCC’s seasonal record of 5-2 mentioned near the end of the article. I also think the addition of the top two players’ scores is a great way to demonstrate the team’s success. The match details and quotes from the head coach provide a great overview of GCC’s 3-0 win and the team’s performance. Though one thing I would have liked to see was a bit more coverage of what happened during the actual sets. Maybe some descriptions detailing some close moments, intense rallies, or interesting plays that contributed to GCC’s victory. I think something like this could help readers visualize what it was like at that game, though I also recognize that in conjunction with the more statistical direction of the article, it may be a bit overloaded or difficult to add in. Regardless, this is already a great article!

  5. Hey Mykenzie! This is a very thorough overview of the volleyball match between Glendale Community College and South Mountain Community College. You went into a lot of detail, addressing the stats of each set in your third paragraph, and the stats in total in the following one. In general, I think this is useful information that gives the readers a lot of insight into how stressful or victorious each game was for the players; however, I would consider restructuring the format of the sentences so they aren’t so repetitive! I think it was good to get a quote from the coach, but I think your news story could have been strengthened if you had interviewed a player or a member of the audience watching the game as well! I appreciate the fact that you added links to the bottom of your news story so people could learn more about the volleyball game or contact the coach herself. Overall, you managed to identify your who, what, when, where, why, and how, while also explaining the major details surrounding the entirety of the game. This story is also relevant to GCC students and staff. Aside from a few small grammatical errors, I think this is really solid. Great job!

  6. The thing I would change is maybe you should mention who had the attacks and who had the kills, and also who committed the errors. Attacks and kills are also very important in volleyball, and so are errors. You could also mention how many attacks those people had; if you do plan on going into journalism, every individual stat counts, especially in sports. That will also help with the specifics. That is about the only thing I would change.
