By Zakiah Awawdah
As fall is soon starting to settle in our surrounding environment, GCC students are finding the best place to handle a lot of courses that aren’t in a classroom or at a library. Instead, a number that has increased, such as a neighborhood park, is a green space that is essential for mental clarity, stress relief and gaining back all the energy.
According to many, spending just about 30 minutes in a public park can lower levels of stress, reducing academic anxiety while also strengthening memory and attention span. For GCC students, this being an off campus retreat serves as a main purpose for a space that can be utilized for anyone’s well being!

This kind of park is very great in its natural setting, it captures the desert landscaping but also balancing with the greenery that is overcome, such as the trees while the florals are very vibrant! It offers quite a backdrop where students can read, study, review and/or have physical activity. These natural areas act as a boundary between school and everyday life.

Beyond the quiet reflection, the park plays a crucial role for community connections through active play. The outdoor basketball courts serve as a major area where students and local residents gather to play any games as the afternoon sun comes. It provides a lively space where many can channel their energy that comes from the stress of exams, assignments, projects, etc. It helps to build connections outside of the classroom environment!

The public parks prove to be more than just patches of green, they are an extension of mental health and wellness. Taking a step away from campus to enjoy a local park might just be the most productive decision a student can make!
