The Weekly Gaucho Podcast, Episode 7
In this week’s episode, the host Enrique Vargas explores the intricate history of the used-to-be music sharing platform Napster and its current state as an artificial intelligence tool.
Napster is a name many may not recognize or have thought about for decades, as its first and most popular iteration launched back in June 1999. Created by just two young college students, Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, Napster was a peer-to-peer file sharing application used by millions to distribute music digitally through MP3 files.
Enrique delves into the inevitable downfall of this platform and its subsequent line of acquisitions following its shutdown in July 2001. Detailing the specific companies that would purchase Napster across the years, as well as the intentions some of these companies had for the platform or rather brand at the time.
Beyond the history of Napster, the host looks further into the current state of the brand and how the platform is run by its newest parent company. In a major deviation from previous acquisitions, Napster is no longer being kept as a music subscription service and is instead an artificial intelligence tool and music creation platform.
This feeds into a broader conversation about the juxtaposition of Napster’s original impact and current status, as Napster seems to be functioning similarly to how it did in the past in a roundabout way. It also opens up discussion about the ethics of AI in the music industry and what it does to artists. Such as AI increasing revenue loss due to most streaming platforms utilizing a pro-rata system, which means the more total streams equal smaller payout per stream, and an influx of AI songs on streaming platforms inflates the denominator.
The episode ends by asking listeners what they think. How they feel about the current direction Napster is taking, how they feel about AI seemingly overtaking businesses everywhere, and how they feel about Napster overall after listening to the episode.
