GCC Job Workshop connects student with Federal Work-Study
Students are preparing for the real world by attending the Federal Work-Study Job Workshop event at the Glendale Community College Career Services, where counselors are ready to help students find the right position on campus. A variety of students attended on Wednesday, September 9th, who are seeking strong advice from counselors.
The warm, welcoming counselor presented a variety of information on looking for a job on campus and how to apply. The presentation is helping students who are willing to work a flexible schedule between classes and use Work Study as an opportunity to gain work experience.
The GCC counselors also provided information on where to apply by giving step-by-step instructions on filling out a resume, cover letter, and FAFSA application. You can also look at the Work Study website to see what kind of jobs are available.
Career service counselor, Mollie Sutherland, shared a strategy on how a regular job should be familiar with the Work Study program when applying for a regular job. By saying, “When you are applying for your resume, you would put the role in instead of adding the Work Study program because it would be a type of funding which is not relevant.”
During the presentation, a curious student asked: “Why is it important to apply for FAFSA?”
A financial aid counselor, Jermy Bilnoski, said: “It is to see if you are eligible for loan offers, scholarships, and income.”
While the presentation was ending, a peer success coach, Fawwaz Ali, gave wonderful advice to the students by saying, “ Don’t feel discouraged if they don’t accept you. There are a ton of opportunities that will fit you more.”

Hi Mya! Guiding financial aid and student employment options can often feel overwhelming, so having an event like the Federal Work Study Job Workshop at the Career Services Center is an incredible resource for GCC students. I really appreciated how clearly you broke down the practical guidance provided by the counselors, especially regarding how work study offers flexible scheduling made specifically around class routines.
The tips included in your article are super important. Career service counselor Mollie Sutherland’s advice about how to frame work study roles on a resume focusing on the job duties rather than specifying the funding type is a nuance that many students wouldn’t think of, but it makes total sense for resume building. Additionally, including financial aid counselor Jermy Bilnoski’s explanation of why submitting a FAFSA is so critical helps anyone who is confused on the financial aid process for anyone reading.
I also loved the encouraging quote from peer success coach Fawwaz Ali about not getting discouraged if a position falls through. Reminding students that there are plenty of other opportunities that might be an even better fit helps build strength during the job application process. Thank you for sharing such informative coverage that connects students directly to valuable campus resources!
