GCC Brings Logan and Cooper to campus for Stress Relief for Students, Staff, and Faculty
The Glendale Community College Library held a free live therapy dog de-stress event on September 10th to provide students, staff, and faculty with a free, accessible way to manage stress and boost morale by bringing certified therapy dogs to a quiet study space.
The students all sat around the therapy dogs Logan and Cooper and had a great time petting, talking to their handlers and having a great time hanging out and de-stressing. According to the librarian, “I think it generally increases student morale. You know, it relieves stress from people… it’s a stress reliever,” which means it can be a great help to students for their morale in various situations they are in. The librarian also mentioned, “ I think it gives an opportunity to talk to each other, different conversations and stuff. Just people gathering, that’s amazing”. The on-duty librarian also mentioned how these events can help students de-stress for an upcoming test or final.
One of the therapy dog handlers mentioned that their dog, Cooper, is a local hero in the community and that people always go to him. The on-duty librarian noted that the program is still expanding after launching a few years ago, with the primary goal of giving students a regular opportunity to gather and share diverse conversations on campus. He concluded that the overall atmosphere of the event was “pretty chill’ and brought a clear sense of happiness to the library space to gather, have different conversations, socialize, and experience a chill, relaxing environment.

Hello Adriean, very cool story about the therapy dog event. I really enjoyed your description of the event’s environment as chill.
I agree with the librarian’s quote about this type of event being a way to socialize with students, librarians, and other GCC faculty. Another quote from the library that I enjoyed reading emphasizes the phrase “stress reliever” because the story shows that the librarian and other people who attend this event are relaxed, and they seem to enjoy playing with the dogs. I think your story is more meaningful with a little background information about Cooper being a local hero in the Glendale community.
A few things I wish to know more about in the story are the dogs and the people you interviewed. For instance, at the GCC library there is more than one librarian and members working there. I did enjoy seeing the quotes, and I would like to know the librarian’s name and title. Another thing I wish to learn more about in the story is the dog handlers because I’m curious to know why they come every year and how it started, or where I can find more similar events. Overall, you did a great job on your story, and I hope you had fun attending the event!
