Glendale Community College Women’s basketball fell to Pima Community College Wednesday night. The tough match ended with a loss of 78-28.

On January 31 starting at 5:30 P.M., the Lady Gauchos took on the Pima Aztecs. The Gaucho’s starting five were Rebecca Arave, Kimberly Castillo, Alyssa Fraulino, Gracelyn Nez, and Kateri Spencer. GCC started strong winning the Jump ball, however, they ended the first quarter trailing Pima 23-7. The second quarter resulted in the same making the halftime score 40-17.

Taking a quick 15-minute break, the Gauchos headed over to the locker room to recoup and discuss strategy for the second half. GCC had a lot of work to make up in the second half starting with a 23-point deficit. The Lady Gauchos stepped back onto the court with energy but they couldn’t make up for the run Pima made in the first half. Pima outscored Glendale in the second half 38-11 resulting in a final score of 78-28.

Although it’s a tough loss for the Gauchos, they will face the Aztecs again on February 24 in Tucson. GCC Women’s basketball has been waiting for a win since Wednesday night’s game. Wednesday marked their 5th straight loss since falling to Phoenix Community College 63-60. Their most recent win was against South Mountain Community College a couple of weeks ago. Saturday’s long-awaited rematch against SMCC has been postponed and will soon be rescheduled. The next time the gauchos play will be at Scottsdale Community College on February 7.

Sophomore Forward Gracelyn Nez is playing her first year on the GCC Women’s basketball team. In the Fall of 2022 and 2023, she played with Glendale’s volleyball team. Once volleyball season was over, she decided to continue playing basketball after being a two-sport athlete throughout high school. She recently scored a career-high 43 points against Phoenix College. When asked about the results of Wednesday’s night game Nez said, “It was a tough match for us but we just need to keep practicing and preparing for the matches that are ahead.” With few matches left, Nez and the rest of the Gauchos are getting ready for the remainder of the season. The ladies must secure a few more wins to have a chance of competing in the Regional tournament. The winner of the Regional tournament will get to go to the National Junior College tournament to compete against other Junior colleges nationwide. With that said, It’s important for students and faculty to come out and support the team! The next home game takes place on February 21 against Chander-Gilbert Community College.
