This week includes the first club fair of the year at CGCC. The past Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, student club members hosted tables outside the student pavilion at the Pecos campus, to introduce the clubs and organizations to new potential members.
This excitingly informal event was a great chance to meet other students with similar interests, and build a stronger network on campus. Most but not all clubs were in attendance, and provided a qr code to sign up. Additionally, all the clubs are listed under student life in clubs and organizations (student-life), which will then take you to the clubs page in Coyote Connect where you can sign up as well.
There were definitely some standouts, one being the Fashion Lifestyle and More club! I spoke with president Celeste Garcia who told me “I wanted to start the club to make new friends and be creative. It was definitely difficult to get it all started at first, but as it went on it felt more and more like hanging out with friends and a lot less stressful.” I learned about some exciting field trips they had last semester, such as going to the Phoenix art museum and Maricopa’s Equity Prism Drag Ball (With Willow Pill winner of Ru Paul’s Drag Race season 14 headlining!). When asked what the club environment was like, Celeste explained “Our members enjoy meeting new people and having fun while exploring the latest trends and ideas. We believe in the power of creativity and individual expression, and we aim to provide a platform where everyone can share their unique perspectives and experiences.” For any who are interested in Fashion Lifestyle and More, meets every other Friday at noon in SC 103.
One of the larger clubs is actually the Esports club. This group provides a space for the gamers of our campus. They have their own computer lab located just outside the library, being open Monday through Friday 2pm till 10pm for students to hang out, play games, or be a nerd and study. The games the Esports club focuses on, or at least has teams for, are Valorant, Overwatch, League of Legends, Rocket League, and Call of Duty. They also have a discord server for students to socialize on as well (https://discord.gg/cgc).
This event was a great opportunity to meet some of the student leaders and clubs on campus, and there are certainly still more clubs and organizations to learn about which can be found in student-life.
Thank you for documenting your experience at the club fair! As a busy person I often find myself completely unable to pop into the student union to familiarize myself with the organizations GCC has to offer. What stands out to me the most is the visible queer opportunities that are popping up on campus. I had not a single clue there was a fashion club that went to Maricopas Drag ball? I didn’t even know there was a drag ball! When I last looked into clubs around campus I found myself disappointed in the lack of representation I felt I had in what I was looking at. The pride table didn’t even have people on it to greet me. It warms my heart to see a club so casually gathering together to enjoy something that’s harder to come by these days.
The documentation you did inspires me to give it a double check. If what I looked at last semester for one day is barely the scope of what GCC has to offer, maybe I can manage to work my schedule around an organized club to be a part of. Before it felt too broad but maybe there is a niche within these clubs that will suit my interests. Especially if they have field trips!
Never been a part of a club, but this sounds like it was a lot of fun! From reading this it made me think to attend one of these events and reach out to a club that caters to my interests. As an introvert, it was always a daunting task to go out and mingle with the community. I think this would be a great first step for many others such as myself to get involved in day-to-day school activities and get involved with the community. I will definitely be checking out the Coyote Connect to see how I can get involved. I am pretty interested in the Fashion Lifestyle and Esports club, both of them sound like they have a wonderful community. I am curious when the next club fair is, I am excited to check it out and explore the endless possibilities, I hope to meet some cool new people too!
The club fair at CGCC sounds like an exceptional opportunity for students to explore their interests and build connections with peers who share their passions. It’s wonderful to see events like these bringing a strong sense of community and inclusivity to campus. The Fashion Lifestyle and More club, led by Celeste Garcia, stood out to me with its emphasis on creativity, friendship, and exploration of trends. Field trips to the Phoenix Art Museum and Maricopa’s Equity Prism Drag Ball sound fun and exciting. Similarly, the Esports club seems to provide an excellent space for gamers to come together, compete, and socialize. With a dedicated computer lab and a range of popular games to enjoy, it’s clear that this club caters to a big majority of gamers at CGCC.
Events like the club fair not only introduce students to a diverse range of clubs and organizations but also showcase the dedication and
vision of student leaders. I’m confident that the fair left many students feeling inspired and eager to participate actively in the dynamic campus life at CGCC. Looking forward to hearing more about the enriching activities and initiatives taking place on campus!
