A Memorable Poolside Summer
As the summer season has come to an end, the memories of blazing afternoons and cooling activities may linger in our minds. For GCC student Enrique Vargas, one of his most cherished summer memories dates back to his middle school years, as he eagerly awaited the finished construction of a swimming pool at his home.
For years up until this point, Enrique had taken swimming class after swimming class, sparsely visited the nearby public pool, and attended several birthday pool parties. Though, with all the swimming he did it was met with some level of reluctancy, as the environment always felt too loud, exposed, or overwhelming. So, when he heard the news that his family was going to be building a private pool in the backyard, he was ecstatic.
Along with the pool, he found out, would come some new greenery, seating, and decor as well. Meaning an entire backyard overhaul, complete with additions like small palm trees, string lights, and aquatic decorations.

After learning of the practically new backyard that was soon to be, Enrique began to envision how he would spend his time with the new and secluded pool. Should he go swimming every weekend, every other weekend, should he lounge by the pool deck with only his legs in the water, should he swim laps across the pool or just floating around?
All of these thoughts brought further excitement to his mind, as he pondered the idea of having the freedom to swim whenever the temperature allowed it, without obligation to learn or practice anything, as well as the fact that his family would be the only other people around. He could swim or take a seat on a pool chair right in the comfort of the backyard.

Once the pool was finished, Enrique swam every weekend for upwards of an hour each day, but over the next couple years, he ended up spending much less time in it than he had imagined.
He still went for a swim occasionally, but paid comparably little attention to it, even glancing at the wall decorations more often as he walked past window looking outside.

Although he does not go in the pool nearly as often anymore, Enrique still looks back on that old summer memory fondly, as it remained as one of his most exciting and anticipated summers of his childhood.
