Trump Proposes a $5,000 Dividend for Americans if Republicans Win Midterms

As Republicans lose momentum in the midterms, President Trump promised a $5,000 dividend to every American if Republicans retain control of Congress, speaking at the Republicans’ midterm convention in Dallas on Sept. 9. He said the payments would help rally voters behind Republicans in the midterm elections.

Trump called the proposal a “Trump Dividend” and said the money would come from money gained through tariffs and other sources. He also said he believed Congress would not need to approve the payments, and that recipients would be forced to spend the money in the United States. The proposal could cost more than $1 trillion dollars, according to CBS News Texas.

The announcement has caused concerns about whether the payments would be legally and financially possible. Trump said the plan would provide a significant economic boost by putting money directly into Americans’ hands, while others say it will drive up debt and cause inflation.

One voter I interviewed, with 2 degrees in finance and law, when asked about Trump’s proposal, said payments have never been used for political purposes before. He pointed to the federal stimulus checks issued during COVID-19, but said those payments were intended to give relief from the pandemic rather than influence an election.

The voter also stated that the dividends will increase the national debt and inflation. He said he would not expect to receive any money if Republicans win, with 2 previous promises of payments that never happened.

Despite Trump’s proposal, the voter said he would absolutely not support Republicans in federal elections, although he remained open to voting for Republicans in local city elections.

  1. Hey! I love the reporting on this. I could never report on politics, especially now, because of the goofiness and absurdity of most politicians. I think your first paragraph runs a little long, but it gives some good details. I wish the voter who was interviewed was directly quoted, but the credibility of the source is there. The content that the article is speaking about is, I’ll just say, interesting. The President has promised similar payments in the past with no follow-through, so the “Trump Dividend” claim is dubious, at best. It upsets me because these are essentially bribes that most likely won’t be followed through on again that target the most vulnerable people. I like the mention of stimulus checks in the article; it’s a good point, since some people might say it’s the same thing as President Trump’s proposal right now. This post raises some important questions about swaying public decisions for elections.
