Glendale Community College offers a wide range of free supplementary materials, including live online lectures and workshops hosted by remarkable instructors; one such instructor is Professor Marc Krell, who recently provided a virtual workshop on writing a professional work email last Thursday, September 19.

The workshop lasted approximately an hour, from 1-2 p.m., and covered numerous elements of drafting a good professional email. Professor Krell wanted his students to get the most out of the lecture, so he made sure to include interactive aspects. He stated that he prefers the workshop approach to instruction since it requires students to engage with the material more.

Professor Krell explained that knowing how to write a professional email is relevant to “anything that has to do with employment or an application process.” He says “that almost anything you do in the business world involves a professional email.”

Marc Krell

Professor Krell has an extensive background in presenting lectures and workshops. He explains that he has been doing this for “several years off and on” but can’t quantify the exact number. He has done various webinars and presentations with small and large groups over the years. As a faculty member, he gave lectures in person many years ago but has since transitioned to providing online workshops and lectures.

Two students attended the Thursday lecture. Professor Krell explained that the hope was to have at least five to ten students attend. The first two workshops he did this semester had about three to four students. “There is a need to motivate people,” he says. Professor Krell believes that publicizing these supplemental lectures will play an important role in motivating students. Workshops could be advertised on the GCC website or through flyers. However, he believes the most effective way to engage students is through student-to-student word of mouth.

If students miss a lecture, they’re in luck. These live online lectures have been recorded; however, there is currently no dedicated location to access the lecture recordings. If students want to access a recorded lecture, they must contact the instructor who taught the session.

It is not always apparent who the instructor for each course will be, so students should plan ahead of time and attend live lectures. Students can find information about upcoming events on the GCC website under student life, then upcoming events. Here, students can learn about upcoming workshops and apply to receive information about the event they registered for using their GCC email address.

For students interested in other workshops facilitated by Professor Krell, his next workshop is “Take Control of your Job Search” on Sep. 26, 1-2 p.m.
